"The human factor: what good is expensive (security) software if it does not consider the user?" - was the title of Manfred Beth's exciting lecture on January 5th. With this, the Saarbrücken office manager of UIMC Dr. Voßbein GmbH & Co KG opened the public lecture series "Data Protection in Practice," which is being held online for the first time this semester.

New technical possibilities, such as social networking, make people less cautious: While people used to chat with their colleagues in the coffee kitchen in a completely "analog" manner, they now spread their chit-chat on the internet. This means that a global audience is listening, possibly creating a leak in the system - Beth described a scenario that is all too common. Through illustrative and current examples, he revealed that data security is mainly jeopardized by negligent actions on people' s part. In his opinion, IT security should be a chief matter, because attacks are becoming even more refined and prevalent. Moreover, security is not a project, but a constantly evolving process.
